Seeking Associate Editor

Newtown Literary is seeking an associate editor. This is a year-long (renewable), volunteer position starting immediately. The associate editor will join the editor-in-chief, managing editor, production editor, assistant editors, and the poetry and prose editors, as well as the current editorial board, in bringing the semi-annual Queens literary journal to press.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Soliciting submissions for the journal through social media, personal contacts, and attendance at local reading series as well as managing the submissions period via Submittable.

  • Assisting with supplemental efforts to the end of garnering submission and involvement with the journal.

  • Overseeing the submissions and acceptance process, including participation in the editors selection meeting where final decisions about pieces to accept are made in conjunction with editor-in-chief, managing editor, and the poetry and prose editors.

  • Assisting the poetry and prose editors in completing a first-pass editing of selected pieces in poetry or prose, using Chicago Manual of Style.

  • Organizing each issue’s interview package feature.

Qualifications:

 

  • Current resident of Queens.

  • Able to meet strict deadlines and pay attention to details.

  • Productive communication skills.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, including the track changes and commenting functions.

  • Experience or knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style (or willingness to learn).

This is an unpaid position that occasionally receives nominal payment depending on grant status. It is most active during the months December–March (for the Spring/Summer issue) and June–September (for Fall/Winter issue). You will be joining a welcoming and supportive community of writers who believe strongly in the importance of building a community of writers in Queens.
