Boundless Tales:
A Series for Emerging Writers
Founded in 2011, Boundless Tales: A Series for Emerging Writers gives a platform to the best emerging writers in Queens, NY, the city’s largest and most diverse borough. In this quarterly series held at The Local in Long Island City, we showcase writers who are passionate about their writing and want to share their work in a public forum. Each night, five or six readers are given about ten minutes to read their work, with time throughout the night to connect with other members of the Queens literary community.
We are not currently open for submissions, but if you sign up for our email newsletter at the bottom of the page, you will receive notice about when we reopen (as well as many other opportunities).
Submission Guidelines
Boundless Tales accepts submissions of new work from new voices. We ask for your best fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction—work that is daring, funny, poignant, weird, and perceptive. We welcome writers from all walks of life and encourage women, people of color, members of the LGBT community, those with various immigration stories, gender identities, religions, abilities/disabilities, and those whose work includes languages other than English to submit. Those invited to read their work will also receive payment for their participation.
Additional guidelines:
-
Writers must currently live in Queens.
-
Writers must not have had a book or chapbook published (or self-published) or under contract. Writers may be published in online or print journals. We will privilege those with fewer publications, especially in journals with small circulations.
-
What you submit/read must be new work, meaning it has not been published elsewhere at the time of submission (i.e., in print, online, on social media) and you will have not read it as a featured reader elsewhere at the time of the reading. (Having read the submission at an open mic is acceptable.)
-
Submissions must be what you intend to read if you are invited. One submission at a time, although poetry or flash fiction submissions will probably contain multiple pieces that would be read in the 10-minute time frame.
-
All submissions should be in Times New Roman, 12-point, 1-inch margins. Double-spaced, if prose.
-
All submissions must go through the Boundless Tales submissions category on Newtown Literary’s Submittable page (see below for link).
-
Any submissions emailed to Boundless Tales or Newtown Literary will be deleted, unread.
