Hearing Voices - A Poetry Workshop

Newtown Literary's free writing classes got off to a running start in 2018 with a workshop led by our poetry editor, Sokunthary Svay, a Pushcart Prize-nominated writer and musician, and author of Apsara in New York. Held at the Maspeth branch of the Queens Library last Saturday, the event even attracted a writer from as far afield as the Bronx—way to go, marketing team!
The class examined 3 poems with very different styles and themes by Gwendolyn Brooks, Peter Covino, and Agha Shahid Ali, to examine ways in which participants could access the voices that spoke to their own literary instincts.
The next workshop will be held at the Queens Library in Astoria with local editors and the staff of Newtown Literary. The topic: Submitting your work to literary journals.
